#00260, Ice Shadow
I had just made New Snow at Guthega (#00258) and was climbing further up through the spring snow into Conset Steven Pass when I came across a small valley with these amazing segments of ice balancing on just about every rock.
Many were overhanging the freezing creek and too difficult to photograph but eventually I found this one which seemed to have the right combination of forms. In particular I liked the way the translucent ice creates a part shadow.
Many people think I placed the ice but I did not, it is a found object like all my images.
My theory for the creation of this sheet and the thousands of others in the valley goes something like this.
There's a good cover of snow followed by a warm day which partly melts the top layer.
A cold night follows which freezes the partly-melted top layer leaving an ice sheet resting on top of snow.
The rocks are still warm and melt the underlying snow from below (note the small piece of snow this ice is resting on).
As the snow melts and removes its support from the ice, pieces of the sheet break off.
