#00427, Quiet Light

Normally, when searching for a photo, the photographer (or at least this photographer) finds a subject, then looks for the best location to set up the tripod.

However, in this case, the situation was reversed.

It was extremely windy as I walked down onto the rocky foreshore at Cape Freycinet. Too windy in fact to photograph in an exposed position, so my first priority was to find a sheltered spot. Only when this was found could I even think about taking a photo.

I quickly found a calm hollow in the lee of an enormous boulder, then looked for a composition. Luckily I saw this great rock, and behind it, in total contrast, some wispy clouds.

The sun had already set, but the glow in the western sky still provided a directional and soft light. This was what John Sexton calls the "Quiet Light", and I felt that expression made a fitting title.
