These birds where resting on the beach with their beaks tucked into their feathers. The composition pretty much took care of itself but I did have the option to place them high or low in the frame.
I chose high for two reasons. Firstly it increases the impression that we're looking up at the birds which, with the camera placed on the sand, we are.
Secondly, and with my photojournalist hat on, this would make a great double-page spread in a magazine. The gutter (the fold of the magazine where the staples are) can divide the birds without ruining the shot as is often the case, and the light sand at the bottom is perfect to drop some copy into.
