Nature Photography by Rob Gray :: Image #21033

Sunrise at Kata Tjuta, Uluru-Kata Tjuta NP, NT

The domes of Kata Tjuta are certainly a spectacular sight, and usually depicted in bright sunlight so the red of the rocks contrasts against a beep blue sky. I've given them that visual treatment myself several times but always felt that a different approach was called for.

On this morning I was in place before sunrise, hoping for something different. As the sun rose the light streamed through hidden valleys and struck the side of several domes. I had my shot.

I had several other shots as well, including some with a tighter composition. Unfortunately the Anangu elders (traditional owners of Uluru and Kata Tjuta) have set many rules for photographers (all artists in fact) and one of those rules is that you must show at least three domes in any image of Kata Tjuta. So my tighter shots showing only one or two domes were rejected when I applied for permission to use the shots taken in the park.
