I had just made New Snow at Guthega and was climbing further up through the spring snow into Conset Steven Pass when I came across a small valley with these amazing segments of ice balancing on just about every rock.

Many were overhanging the freezing creek and too difficult to photograph but eventually I found this one which seemed to have the right combination of forms. In particular I liked the way the translucent ice creates a part shadow.

Many people think I placed the ice but I did not, it is a found object like all my images.

My theory for the creation of this sheet and the thousands of others in the valley goes something like this.

  • There's a good cover of snow followed by a warm day which partly melts the top layer.
  • A cold night follows which freezes the partly melted top layer leaving an ice sheet resting on top of snow.
  • The rocks are still warm and melt the underlying snow from below (note the small piece of snow this ice is resting on).
  • As the snow melts and removes its support from the ice, pieces of the sheet break off.
